Alumni Service Award

presented posthumously to

Lindsey Hopkins III

Lindsey Hopkins III (BBA '61)

Linkins Investments
Atlanta, Georgia

Comments made by Dan Magill at the May 20, 2004 Terry College Alumni Awards ceremony in honor of the late Lindsey Hopkins, III:

"It is most fitting that Lindsey Hopkins, III receive the first annual Terry College of Business Alumni Service Award named in his honor. Almost all of you here today certainly know how fervently Lindsey loved Terry college and how proud he was to be associated with its programs. It is an honor and pleasure for me to recall his days as an outstanding tennis player.

When I became tennis coach at Georgia in 1955, we didn't have any scholarships. But most of the best young players in the state were protgs of Jack Waters at the Driving Club and sons of wealthy Georgia alumni. They didn't NEED scholarships. So I asked the parents of three outstanding juniors (Lindsey Hopkins III, Richard Courts III and Alfred Thompson Jr.) to send their sons to their alma materand that's how we "RECRUITED" the best freshman team in Georgia historyat that time.

Lindsey won the state collegiate singles and doubles twice, and twice was runner-up in the SEC doubles finals to Tulane teams that won the NCAAs. He captained our strong team his senior season in 1959.

He was a superb volleyer and now each year the Lindsey Hopkins Volleying Award is given to the Georgia player most proficient in that stroke.

Those three Buckhead boys - Lindsey, Richard and Alfred - all majored in business at Georgia, and all have been very loyal and generous in support of many programs at their beloved alma mater.

The Hopkins Indoor tennis courts, given by Lindsey's famous father in honor of Lindsey, have been the biggest factor in Georgia becoming a national power in tennis. They have enabled the team to practice everyday, regardless of weather, a fact that has helped recruit top players. When they were dedicated in 1980, there were only three collegiate indoor tennis layouts in the country.

One of Lindsey's last acts before he entered Piedmont Hospital last month was to finalize plans for his family to be together at Indianapolis this weekend for the induction of his father in the Indianapolis 500 Hall of Fame. His family still plans to be there, and I feel sure that Lindsey and his father will be TOGETHER AGAIN watching the ceremonies in Indianapolis.

I feel sure he's here today, too."
