Career Resources
The J. M. Tull School of Accounting takes an active role in the placement activities of its students. As part of our commitment to students and the profession, the School requires all undergraduate accounting majors to enroll in ACCT 5710 and 5720, Professional Accounting I and II. ACCT 5710 explores the various career opportunities in the profession. Guest speakers from industry, public accounting, and governmental agencies talk to junior accounting majors about the pros and cons of their particular field. This gives students a chance to consider their potential employment prospects early in their academic career. ACCT 5720 entails business writing exercises, developing a resume, and working on public speaking skills with group presentations.
Every Fall Semester, the Tull School sponsors an Accounting Career Day for our students to meet prospective employers to discuss employment and/or internship opportunities. As a participant in Accounting Career Day, each student's resume is included in our annual Accounting Resume Book. This book is mailed to over 150 employers who actively seek UGA accounting graduates. Students also receive a copy of our Recruiting Handbook that provides information about the interview process, as well as a list of contacts and informational sheets on the employers who receive the students' resumes.
The University of Georgia's Career Center aids students in their job search as well. They provide information on employment opportunities as well as the interview facilities for most of the recruiting activities. Various seminars regarding the interview process and job search are given on a daily basis.
For the 2006-07 year, starting salaries for our graduates with national public accounting firms averaged $49,000. The average for local/regional accounting firm was $50,000. Most of our students accept employment in the Atlanta/metro area. However, students have also accepted positions in various southeastern locations, such as Orlando, Charlotte, Greenville, Savannah, and Chattanooga, as well as Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Kansas City, and New York City. During the past several years, all of the organizations on this site recruited for the Atlanta area unless otherwise noted.
