About Me

My name is Dr. Jay E. Aronson. I am a Professor of Management Information Systems in the Terry College of Business at The University of Georgia. I earned my B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering both from Carnegie Mellon University. I also earned my M.S. in Operations Research and Ph.D. in Industrial Administration from The Graduate School of Industrial Administration (GSIA) at Carnegie Mellon University.

I live in Athens, Georgia with my wife, Sharon, and my 3 children, Marla, Michael and Stephanie. We were featured in a story about Winter Holidays in Athens Magazine in December 1995. Here we are in an around 10 year old photo (I'll get a new one up someday!):

Some of my hobbies include Scuba Diving and Balloon Animals. I'm also a language junkie. Though not fluent, I have attempted learning English (ok, so it's my native language), French, German, Latin, Yiddish, Hebrew, Persian, Arabic, and Dutch. I feel that it is important to be able to at least be polite and say "I don't understand you" and "two beers please" (the extend of my Spanish) in the native language of whatever country you visit. Currently, I'm attempting to develop real fluency in Dutch. I can read, and with a dictionary, translate.

Sharon, Marla and Michael are both regularly involved in playing tennis.
Marla is currently a Sophomore at Georgia Tech.
Michael is a junior at Clarke Central High School and is on the Cross Country, Swim and Tennis Teams.
Stephanie is an 8th grader at Clarke Middle School. She is a Cheerleader, and is involved in competitive swimming and diving, both in leagues and with the CCHS Swim Team.

My Academic Interests

I am primarily performing research in Knowledge Manangement and Electronic Commerce. Other research includes Collaborative Computing (Group Support Systems), Networks, Parallel Network Optimization, Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems, Artificial Neural Networks, Television Program Scheduling, and Financial Applications of Artificial Neural Networks. I also have done some applied research in optimizing the manufacturing processes in the kaolin industry. You can read about some of it in my Case Applications in my Decision Support Systems and Intelligent Systems book (6th and 7th editions).

I firmly believe that knowledge management is going to make major changes in the way information is used in the modern enterprise. See Chapter 9 of Turban, E. and Jay E. Aronson, Decision Support Systems and Intelligent Systems, Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, NJ 2001 for a good overviews of knowledge management.

My work has been published in Management Science, Information Systems Research (ISR), Management Information Systems Quarterly (MISQ), Naval Research Logistics, Networks, the Annals of Operations Research, the Institute of Industrial Engineers Transactions, the Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics, Computers & Operations Research, the European Journal of Operational Research, Large Scale Systems, Decision Sciences, the Journal of Operations Management, International Journal of Production Research, and other places.
